Yes, this edition is going to cost us a ton to play. Most of this is frivelous crap; probably not worth 1/2 of what your going to pay. I can't post the picture on here becuase I'm at work and have limited net access; but if you look at the picture I'd previously posted on the podcast site you'll see what I'm talking about. Or you can head over to GW's Advance Order Page and see it all yourself.

Warhammer Rulebook 528 Page Rulebook (Hardback) July 10th $74.25
The main book. Sadly as the starter set will not release until either Late August or Sept. were going to need this.

Warhammer Battle Magic 56 Large Spell Cards July 10th $9.90
Frivelous waste. Very cool idea; nice for reference; but the spells will be in the main book according to them.

Warhammer Collectors' Edition 528 Page Book July 10th $123.75
Same as the book above; but with cloth or leather backing; very nice looking.

Warhammer Gamers' Edition Rulebook, Templates, Counters, Box July 10th $123.7
If your wanting it all, than order this. Limited release; but for the same price as the LE book you might as well get everything else.

Warhammer Template Set Flame Template, Round Template July 10th $8.25
The templates look cool; but honestly I think I'll stick with the old plastic ones. These ones seem so ornamental that they'd be tough to really call out hits effectively.

Warhammer Counter Set Counters & Combat Resolution Tracker July 10th $13.25
Again; extremely ornamental.

Warhammer Skull Dice 8 Dice and Pouch July 10th $11.50
The only thing that looks worth it's money to me.

Engineer's Ranging Set Dividers and Ranging Ruler July 10th $29.75
Have I said frivelous enough? This just seems silly.

Citizens of the Empire: Duellists 2 Figure Blister July 10th $14.00
Ah the good stuff! These LE Empire models look amazing!

Citizens of the Empire: Merchant & Scribe 2 Figure Blister July 10th $14.00
These too!

Citizens of the Empire: Regimental Mascot 1 Figure Blister July 10th $16.50
This is a dude with a trained bear. Need I say more about this coolness.

Sadly; we will have to purchase the giant book. It's just a question of how much you want to pay for it. If you want it all; the set is definitely worth it; but I think the only things I'll want to get is the bear dude, the dice and the main book. Screw all the rest of it. I'm fine with all my old templates, markers, measuring devices, etc... Total cost for what I want: $102.25... Ouch... Not to mention in 2 months when the starter get's released I'm totally expecting a price tag of $90-100. Ugh...

Remember to check out the podcast as I should have had a look through the book itself when the next episode airs.
All of the 'frivolous crap' is optional, they made cool collectors style items for people who want them, I don't see any reason to complain about that. As for the rulebook, even at $100, for a five year run, that's $20 a year, less than $2 a month, seems reasonable to me?

GW is a company, they are in it to be succesfull and make money. Some of their products are poorly priced, and some of their business practices are just insane. Nothing wrong with any of this, though.
Its a bloody expensive rulebook, more pricey than, say, new RPG hardbacks sell for, and they have more useful info in them.

If they release a starter set like last time it might be worth waiting for that to pick up the condensed book.

Personally, I will check out someone elses copy, play a game or two then decide if 8th ed will make it to my neck of the woods.
No; don't misunderstand me. I'm not complaining; just saying that I think a lot of it's frivelous and silly. If I as complaining it'd be because I was being forced to buy all that stuff; I'm not. I got no issue with all the stuff they've put up. I was just giving my opinions on it all. Smile
Oh yeah, if I had money to burn I would buy it all lol

as I dont, I will do it as cheap as I can, plus I could make some of that stuff much better Wink
Main book? Yes. I have some issues with the 7th edition rules as I learn them. Mostly dealing with close combat and causalities. It seems they are fixing that, so yeah! Also I hear more randomness and a enhanced magical item list. So I'm into it. Also as a beginner I am glad the playing field will now be leveled, so now all my opponents will be learning new rules. And how to exploit.

Magic Cards? Yes. I like the idea and gives me something to throw(in a friendly way) in my opponents face.

Templates? Tad le cheese. No.

Miniatures? YES! I love that the word duelist is now back into the fold at GW.

So overall excited. And as been talked about, they need revenue streams, and a new rulebook gives them that. I wish they would divert some resource from LOTR to Warhammer, but that's just me.
Enh, considering how much I play... it's worth it easily.

As for the optional cool stuff: I'll almost certainly be ordering those duelist guys. It'd be very easy to find a use for both. Either as Captains, or champions in Handgunners and Greatswords.
In a globally poor economy why is GW increasing the price of the rulebook by about 40% over the old one? I've been unemployed most of the last year and a half and can't really afford this hit to the budget.

It's almost like they are begging for people to make illegal copies of the books.

I'm hoping the Islands of Blood (posted and removed from GW's site a few days ago) starter set has the mini rulebook and is at a decent price.
Consider that BfSP right now is sticker priced at $75 and AoBR is $90; I fully assume the new starter box will be $90-$100.

As for the book it is over double the size of the previous book. I fully expected the price increase. Not surprising me at all. Am I happy that it costs more? No; but will I buy it? Yeah, I'll kind of have to.
I fully expect an FAQ for the rulebook by the time the starter set comes out. Big Grin
Agreed
I don't need anything except the rulebook, although at $75 for the BRB, I'm really wondering what's in the un-announced "Island of Blood" Starter set.
Well when 7E came out it was $50 for the book, $45 for BfSP. So it was rather close in price, which makes sense.

8E book is $74.25, and Skull Pass is currently $79 if I remember right. So it should still be withing $5 of the book I'm assuming. What is lost in mini-rulebook outside fluff? I don't know, but I suppose it just offers the options of cheap expendable rule book + figs for new guys or more durable and detailed book for vets. If you happen to play one (or both) armies in the starter, can convert one, or split with a friend... all the better.
The starter sets are one of the best things GW has ever produced, they are bought by new people looking to start the game, as well as veterans who collect one or both of the armies already, or want to. Heck, I STILL keep thinking about starting a Night Goblin army, and I could use the Dwarves in my Dogs of War, or just have them around for someone else to use!

If the new book is 500 pages though, assume that 1/2 of that is PURE fluff and art, which gives you 250. Now, another half of THOSE are going to be pictures interspersed and fluff blurbs, so about 125. Then if you cut out the intro, and cut all the rules down to their simplest form, you can probably halve it again, to +/-60 pages, which will be in a lighter binding, and black and white, so the starter set (with mini book) should not be too much more expensive than it is now.

That being said, I am definately going to get this new rulebook. First of all, I love the fluff, and the art and model pictures. Those might be my favourite parts of the game! Second of all, my girlfriend and I are both looking forward to learning this edition together, so I have no doubt we will both be reading it.
Already pre-ordered at my game store, the rule book is NICE!
A side from the price and page count there is no mention of the Dogs in the fluff or the Alliance rules . The spells look different and the magic items list are very good . Watched a game yesterday the game was quick between Gobbs and Dwarfs , combat with the new rules made it quick and fast .

The Dawi were whizzing at 12 -14 inches in to the Greenskins on the charge and the 'stepping up' and horde rules made a big impact on combat . With outnumber gone the muscian still will play a part as well as the banner bearer . Saw the Dawi cannon take a shot at the Gobbo archers . No guess range put a dice in front of unit for the bounce if it did not get a misfire then it went through and scored a wound still at STR 10 but minus 7 armour save . Just a small difference but I can see cannons and mortars being quite good in the new ed .
cannons/mortars good (all partial hitting, all cannon D6 wounds)
flame cannon stills sucks (only war machine that specifies that only models "UNDER" template are hit
stone thrower both cooler and crappier (no longer disallows armor saves, is reduced to S3, but can fire without LOS now)
Here is a cool little video by GW demonstrating the new hobby aids:

Well i ordered the gamers edition since it came in that nifty Imperial Soldiers knapsack.
I'm a sucker for gimmicks!
Yeah, I went for just the normal rulebook today, nothing about the collectors edition stands out to me as something I need. I wouldn't want the folding ruler, as I have no doubt I would demo it, or any of their measuring tools. The Templates are neat, but not something I would spend money on.
I have also fallen under the 8ed spell and have ordered new BRB from Maelstrom Games . Since I had 15% discount code I am getting it for £38 which is better than £45 and post free . But I am not interested in all the gimmicks except may be the magic cards I like the look of them . See if they are cheaper at Maesltrom then !
The one thing that I did see there was the tool which you put along the front corner of your unit, which points out the line of sight (45 degrees). I actually think THAT is pretty neat, and that a fair number of players, especially newer ones, would benefit from its use. When I first started playing, I made a small template which, when set in front of a unit, would show exactly how far (distance) a unit went in a wheel, which was mighty helpful, since I ran an almost all Cavalry army.
I got one of these free at the last tourny I went too, its great and cheap Big Grin

I'm sure you already got the e-mail from GW, but it's Skaven and High Elves.
Thanks, Solaris.

I'm seriously considering to split a couple boxes with a HE player to start over for 8E.
