Tigers versus Skaven—Part II

(Continuing our battle near the River Tarano, between the prinicipalities of Trantio and Miragliano)

Turn 4:
The Grey Seer and his 24 Clanrats moved back toward the Screaming Bell, but were still 2 inches away from it (after fleeing). 6 Skavenslaves fail to rally and continue to flee another 7 inches, off the battlefield, and thus eliminated. 10 Giant Rats also continue to flee, another 10 inches to the left (west), to near the Screaming Bell.

Movement: The 10 Night Runners emerge from their tunnel and sprint 6 inches toward the lower left (southwest).
Long Drong and his Slayer Pirates had planned to march toward the Stormvermin attacking the Paymaster, when they spot the Night Runners emerging from their tunnel and march toward
them. The other 8 Duellists and 8 Leopards not engaged with those Stormvermin move toward Long Drong, to protect the Paymaster. He (Ulrich Basinger) moves to a safer position behind
their line. Murtin joins these Duellists.

Magic: None of the Wizards casts any spells successfully this turn!

Shooting: The Warpfire Cannon misfires! It cannot fire again until Turn 5.
The Night Runners use their slings and kill 1 Dwarf Slayer (Long Drong and 8 left).
Malakai’s Goblin Hewer shoots at the Warpfire Cannon and inflicts 2 more wounds on it, eliminating it!
Long Drong and his 8 remaining Slayers inflict 13 wounds on the Night Runners, killing them!
Our cannon hits the Screaming Bell, destroying it! The Grey Seer and his 24 Clanrats panic and flee 3 inches north, to 7 inches south of their edge of No Man’s Land (NML).
I miss with my pistol, though.

Close Combat: The 3 Stormvermin attack the 8 Duellists facing them, but inflict no wounds.
Boneripper kills 1 Lancer (from the 2nd Lancers), leaving 4. But, they do not flee.
Thanquol’s Stormvermin hit my 1st Lancers, but inflict no wounds.
The 18 Skavenslaves attack Voland and his Venators, but inflict no wounds.
The Skavenslaves versus Golgfag and his Ogres do not manage to inflict any wounds on them, either.
The 17 Clanrats attacking Pirazzo and his Lost Legion, however, manage to kill 2 more Pikemen (Pirazzo, 4 Crossbowmen and 1 Pikemen are left). But, they do not flee.
Pirazzo and his men strike back, killing 3 more of them, and the 14 Clanrats panic. They flee 9 inches, but Pirazzo and his Legion pursues them 12 inches, overrunning them and eliminating
them!
The Headquarters units kill the remaining 3 Stormvermin threatening the Paymaster, eliminating them.
My lancers kill 1 more Stormvermin, and the 2nd Lancers reduce Boneripper to only 1 wound left.
Voland and his men kill 4 more frenzied Skavenslaves (5 left).
Golgfag and his Ogres kill the last 4 Skavenslaves facing them, eliminating them. This panics Thanquol’s Skavenslaves next to them, as they see the Ogres charging them, and they flee,
sweeping Thanquol and Boneripper with them. They flee 12 inches, but Golgfag and the 2nd Lancers pursue and slay them all! Golgfag kills Thanquol, cutting off his head, while his
Standard Bearer, Skaff, slays Boneripper.
This causes the 5 frenzied Skavenslaves to panic and flee 9 inches toward the right (east) edge of the battlefield.
Thus, the productive Turn 4 ended.

Turn 5:
The Grey Seer rallies his 24 Clanrats, but fails to rally the 10 fleeing Giant Rats, who flee another 9 inches to the left (west), to near the destroyed Warpfire Cannon.
Golgfag and the 2nd Lancers charge the Grey Seer and his Clanrats. Golgfag challenges him, but he scurries to the rear of his troops.
Pirazzo and his Lost Legion, along with 6 of the Tilean Crossbowmen, march toward the Clanrats, reaching the north edge of No Man’s Land. The other 6 Tileans remain, to help claim the lower left (southwest) quarter of the battlefield.
Long Drong and his remaining 8 Pirates tried to do likewise, but their shorter legs only enabled them to reach our edge of NML.
The Headquarters units help to secure the lower right (southeast) quarter of the field, along with the 3rd Lancers.
My 1st Lancers march toward the upper left (northeast), to secure that quarter of the battlefield.
Voland and his Venators overtake the 5 fleeing Skavenslaves, eliminating them, and helping to secure the northeast quarter.

Magic: The Grey Seer casts his Warp Lightning spell against Golgfag and his Ogres, but Arklan counters it with a dispel scroll.

Shooting: The Grey Seer then fires his Warplock pistol at Golgfag, but it misfires and wounds him once (2 Wounds left).
Our Cannon fires against the Giant Rats, but it misfires. It incurs a minor problem and cannot fire until the next turn.
Malakai and his Goblin Hewer misses the 10 Giant Rats.

Close Combat: The 24 Clanrats wound one of the Ogres, lowering him to only 1 Wound left.
Golgfag and his Ogres kill 7 of them, causing the 17 of them to panic, sweeping the Grey Seer with them. However, they only flee 5 inches, so the Ogres and 2nd Lancers overtake them.
The17 Clanrats were thus overrun and eliminated. Both Golgfag and Skaff strive to slay the seer, but Golgfag accomplishes this, decapitating the wizard.
Turn 6:
The 10 Giant Rats continue to flee, another 3 inches, toward the left (west) of the battlefield.

Magic: No magic was attempted.

Shooting: The Goblin Hewer and the Cannon cannot fire, because some of our troops are in their way.
The Legion and the Crossbowmen kill 8 of the Giant Rats, and the other 2 panic off the battlefield, thus eliminating themselves.

The battle thus ended. No living Skaven remained on the battlefield.

We lost: 4 Pikemen of Pizarro’s Lost Legion; 8 Duellists (the 1st and 2nd Companies); 1 Slayer-Pirate and 1 Slayer member of Malakai Makasson’s Goblin Hewer crew; 4 Tilean Crossbowmen; and 3 Light Cavalry Lancers—a total of 21 soldiers. The Skaven scored 250 points (exactly).

We slew or eliminated: Thanquol and Boneripper; the Grey Seer; Packmaster Skweel Grimtooth; 3 other Packmasters; the Hell Pit Abomination; 5 Rat Ogres; 10 Giant Rats (2 fled); 3 Warplock Jezzail teams (6 Skaven, total); 1 Warplightning Cannon (Engineer and 2 crewmembers?); 10 Night Runner; 40 Stormvermin; 50 Clanrats; 60 Skavenslaves (6 fled)—a total of 191 Skaven—and 1 Rat Swarm. We also scored 400 Victory Points for controlling all four quarters of the battlefield; 100 VPs for slaying the enemy general; 100 points for capturing the enemy’s Battle Standard—600 more Victory Points, for a total of 3,399 Victory Points. The 3,150 Victory Points difference gave us a Massacre over the Skaven!

EPILOGUE:

Golgfag wants to make a necklace of the heads of Thanquol and the Grey Seer, whom he slew in combat. However, Captain Cardo warned him that wizards’ heads sometimes contained powerful magic that might even let them come back to life and regenerate the rest of their bodies. So, Golgfag had his men build a fire and he tossed the two heads into it. After the skulls had been burned clean of flesh, Golgfag pushed them out of the fire with one of his axes and waited until they had cooled. Then, he strung them on a chain, which he proudly hung around his neck.

Cardo asked him how he could now tell one of these Skaven lord skulls from the other, and Golgfag explained that Thanquol had a reputation for acting nervous and so his teeth were more worn than the seer’s teeth. He held up the trophies, pointing out these features as he explained their significance.

The Prince of Trantio had arranged for our dead to be buried in their public cemetery, so their funeral specialists respectfully removed them from the battlefield and transported them to the city, to prepare for their memorial service.

That night, on the battlefield, we honored our heroic dead, who had died, helping us to win this great victory.

The following day, the city welcomed us with a parade through Trantio. A speech of thanks was given us at the public square, followed by the memorial service for our victorious dead.

Thus ended our battle versus the Skaven, near the River Tarano, in Tilea. We began preparing for wherever our next battle might be.
