Greetings, everyone! I have a question or two you might help me with.
On paper, Pirazzo's Lost Legion--with its handpicked combination of crossbowmen and pikemen--and the Marksmen of Miragliano look like impressive units. Yet, for some reason, I find myself choosing either Braganza's Besiegers (for crossbows, heavy armor and pavises) or Leopold's Leopards, for their Unbreakable status, instead.
What do you think about these units? Do you prefer the Lost Legion or the Marksmen over the Besiegers and Leopards? If so, why? Or, why not?
I would like to use the first two units, above, but I always choose the last two units, at the last moment.
The problem we have with fielding Ranged RoR is the Hero and the Standard/Musician we have to pay for, but don't use. This means that you get more than twice as much common crossbowmen than you get legendary ones. If you have enough space in your part of the field, the normal crossbowmen will be enough in most cases, they're cheap and hit just as well/hard as the besiegers do. Usually, these units shouldn't draw alot of fire, because the enemy has other problems to care about (Voland, Asarnil, Maneaters, Rhinoxriders etc.) so the better armor save of the besiegers remains relatively useless...

The marksman on the other hand I like quite alot. Their BS 4 means that they hit good, even with Stand 'n Shoot or on long Range. They can inflict casualties from turn 1 in most cases! If you haven't a good line of sight for two or three units of common crossbowers, take the Marksmen instead. I usually attach the paymaster to them, who can help shooting things and looking shiny. Maximilian can save the paymaster as some kind of bodyguard and everything is fine.

The RoR-Pikes are different... the Leopards with their Immune to Psychology are steady, but the lost legion is very flexible...I usually field Ricco, because I like WS 4 and Heavy Armor, but the second choice would go to the Lost legion. I like the miniatures and they can also serve as bodyguard for the paymaster (who can again shoot something with a crossbow). A unit of 23 Legionnaires with paymaster is impressive and effective for sure. Both the leopards and the lost legion suffer from their vulnerability against shooting and magic... T 3 and light armor isn't a good life insurrance, so you have to screen them with some duelists or force the "other guy" to focus on the evil giant/rhinoxrider/maneater/mengil instead!

Greetings

Of the RoRs you listed: Marksmen, Besiegers, Leopold, and Pizarro, I only really like Leopold, because it's an ItP brick.
Marksmen & Besiegers are very expensive for shooting units, and are generally outperformed by same points in basic Xbows, or Xbows + Duellists. Tho I do very much like the look of Besiegers!
Pizarro is an odd case, as the Xbow cost isn't prohibitive. Basically, you're paying extra to give Pike a Stand & Shoot option. The problem is that Pike are already very expensive for infantry, so paying more, plus buying Full Command with a Captain makes them a bit too rich for my tastes.

Your suggestion about using them to protect the Paymaster--instead of hiring Special Bodyguards--is a good point. I am going to rethink my army list, to reflect this idea! But, wouldn't using the Besiegers as the Bodyguard be better, since they have heavy armor and pavises?
Hmm, sounds pretty reasonable. You could give it a try, he won't get shot that way! And the Besiegers look certainly better on the field than the Marksmen, don't they?
