Greetings, everyone! I have a question: Do any of you hire Daddallo and his Birdmen? It seems like they would be a good unit to use, to take the fight to your opponent! However, I read that they have trouble shooting at objects on the ground, if they fly too high.
What do you think?
Birdmen do alot, but taking a fight they do not... they take agony and pain with them as soon as they even think of combat. They are the worst kind of combattants Humans can produce....
problems with shooting when flying high have been solved after the 5th edition. Flying high was officially banned with the appearance of the 6th edition.... and therefor the problems of the birdmen concerning that matter were solved at the same time
Birdmen van march block enemy troops very good and they can mediocrly shoot a bit.. fast cavalry with bows does exactly the same at a fraction of the cost.....
regards,
henerius
I have to admit, the only use I found for 'em was screening an allied player's Pegasus Knights. The PKs declared the charge, the Birdmen booked outta there, then the PKs made with the killmaimery. Unfortunately, the Birdmen lost half their number doing that - they went from ten-strong to just five survivors. I doubt I'd use them again. Like 'e said, fast cav do it better. The only time that'd be different is if the terrain inhibited even the cavalrymen.
Thank you, my friends. As you say, they are an interesting type of unit, but they seem to have little useful--or longevity--in battle. As you suggest, I think I'll go with horsemen, instead.
I think that they are probably the worst unit out there -- even at half points and they are a rare slot. About the only good thing that they do is give VP to your opponent. BS3 Str 3 x-bows without AP. SUCK. They are terrible in HtH. Even the hero is not up to snuff. So if you are very lucky you might and I repeat might beat a warmachine crew in HtH.
OK - they fly and can march block. If you set up charges correctly with them and some other unit (usually a terror or fear causer) and hopefully the enemy runs.
Otherwise they suck.
A rock will do you more good.
Pick a cannon for the Rare choice. Fast cav for the job. It will even be cheaper point wise to do both.
I think it's general consensus that Birdmen are among the worst RoR available - hugely expensive, and very weak. For the same points, 2 units of Fast Cav are far better.
Interesting models, tho.
I'm a big fan of the models, too, which makes it particularly painful for them to be so bad. Still, I remain bound and determined for there to be a purpose in their lives, and not just 'cause I spent way more money than I care to admit on a unit of ten either!
I agree with Solaris -- I am a fan of the models. I am also trying to find a purpose for them in my army but the rare slot and the point make them pretty much useless to me. Oh yeah they suck to.
Well hopefully when the fellows who are trying to put together the Indy GT Dogs of War book finish it they'll be costed and slotted appropriatly and useful again.
Has anyone ever tried using them as "counts as" fast cav? Just stick em on a cav base and say they have 2 attacks!
the thought crossed my mind yesterday.. nope not me.

I used to want to field Braganza as generic HA&S Dwarves with Xbows. Now he stays in the box.
It occurred to me the other day that the Birdmen would be invaluable if you ever have to assault an enemy in a camp or city on a precipice! They could take out the sentries, just as you move your forces into position for the assault. If there are no other patrols out, then, the flyers could swoop down and open the gates for your other troops!
That would be pretty cool, wouldn't it?
