Hey all, just about to get this cherished rare unit, and wondering about some ideas and tactics for him.

1) large creature and his magic item that gives him a bonus against shooting, do they counteract each other?

2) He's worth 460 and his wound is 2. Seems very risky, especially against the RBT. Any ideas? OR is the charge right in and breathweapon the best idea?

In general, I guess you could call this a "beginners flyer primer".
1. The magic item effectively cancels out Large Target, just like a Standard might cancel out Outnumbering

2. The Elf dies fast, that's his weakness.
1. It doesn't cancel out everything about being a large target. People still fire in 2 ranks against you. But does counter-act the +1 to hit large targets.
2. Asarnil himself is only worth like 130 points, it's Deathfang who's worth 330 (or something along those lines). It's still somewhat hard to get full points for Asarnil and Deathfang due to Deathfang's 6 wounds.

Personally, the way I use him is. Try and stay out of trouble in the first turn or two. Using terrain to block warmachine line of sight. If there's no warmachines, you're pretty safe to fly around as you want.

Swoop into the backlines near stuff like archers, etc or around the rear/flanks of units and go to down with your flame breath. Especially around ranged units can be useful, as they generally won't charge you since Deathfang will eat them alive, as well as having to take a terror check.

Finally, of course they're also monsters in combat as long as Asarnil can't be challenged. In total it's like 9 strength 6 attacks most likely hitting on 3's and wounding on 2's. Nothing to be sniffed at. Since he's flown around the backfield... if you're negating ranks via a flank/rear charge he can usually deal with stuff himself.

Basically, the biggest weakness of them is Asarnil himself. With him around, you have to pick your fights carefully as you may end up being challenged. Of course... it's no good matter if Asarnil gets picked off either, because you have to pass a leadership 8 test, and if failed, need to roll on the monster reaction chart.
However, with Asarnil off, Deathfang can go in and snipe important characters like Hierophants or VC lords.
Thanks guys. Helps a lot. I'm really interested in the flyer tactics. I'm going to get a couple Pegasus and see how they work in getting flank/rear charges. Could make my High Elf opponent think twice.
Remember you cant combine US to negate ranks, it has to be a single model/unit with US5 to get the flank/rear bonus and also negate ranks.

Why wouldn't you send Asarnil against any character positioned behind the main battle line? If you take out the head, the body must follow!
Most characters don't hang out on their own.
Most characters sit in units with champions (Especially important characters like VC generals and Hierophants), so Asarnil can be challenged by the Champion, and the unit can win on static combat resolution. Also, odds are even with the champion gone, the character can just refuse the challenge and they may still win on static combat res.

With Asarnil gone, Deathfang is free to charge in and just allocate attacks onto the character without risk of being challenged by a meer Champion.
So, do you think Asarnil is worth the high price? I was going to use him, but I got a lot of cavalry with the coins he would have cost to hire.
Asarnil is worth the points. Nearly all competitive builds take him.
