Did Asarnil the Dragonlord ever have his own specific model? Or was it basically just a 5th edition HE Dragon with rider?
Nope, he had his own model all right:

The old HE dragon looked quite a lot different IIRC, and was almost wholly in metal.
Thank God for the new HE Noble on Dragon....
Yup, used that model myself, and I know I'm not the only one.
Yeesh... I was trying to find an old HE one to proxy as Asarnil. However the only ones I've found people want like $35-$45 for. While I am fond of collecting old model's I could spend $45 and get the new plastic kit. I guess plastic it will likely be.
Oh go with the new plastic HE dragon. I hate assembling metal models, and since the HE's plastic it was a pretty fun build.
The official Asarnil Dragon is a metal elf on the very old Talisman Dragon.

The old 5E High Elf dragon is smaller and all-metal - avoid at all costs, because the metal wings are horrible.

The new 6E High Elf dragon is a mixed-metal affair based off the Talisman Dragon but with new hands, tail, etc. Big enough, tho.

The new 7E High Elf dragon is all-plastic, and a good choice aside from the weird "flying" base.

Personally, I'm using the 5E Wood Elf Forest Dragon (metal body, plastic wings), as I really like how sinuous the model is. It's also big enough for the current game environment.

And I have the actual Asarnil character model as the rider, so it's all good!
I personally am going to use the 7th Edition Plastic Model - I like it and the options you get (I also like it because I will use the spare parts for my own Army - Mountain Elves).
Asarnil is not at the online store anymore. There might be a new one coming along with the release of the new dragons!ok, the argumentation seems unlikely as they are still a bit away with all other dragons still available.
Since he is as RoR and GW doesn't want people to think about the Regiments of Renown or Dogs or War (out of sight, out of mind) I extremely doubt they will release a new Asarnil model until they change their thinking.
I have the old Asarnil metal parts, and the old metal High Elf dragon that someone else painted. One day I'll spend some time with some green stuff and mould up a saddle to fit him on.

Probably have to strip the dragon though, it's painted blue.
Is the entire model of metal or are the wings plastic on the asarnil model?
The whole dragon is plastic, only Asarnil is in metal.
NO.....the dragon of Asarnil is a 6th edition Dragon.

The dragon is same as the this two box set's dragon.
High Elf Prince Imrik, Dragonlord
Malekith, Witch King on Black Dragon

this two set will provide you a plastic dragon with some metal parts to assemble to black dragon or high elf dragon. If you dun use the metal part and just use the plastic part to assemble it. It is the dragon of Asarnil
I thought that's what I said? Asarnil's dragon is wholly plastic, Imrik's and Malekith's dragons are the same except for a few metal parts, as you said, the 5th ed dragon is almost completely in metal (don't remember if the wings were though).
@Yoda: That's basically what I said above...

Except that the Tailsiman Dragon predates 6E by a considerable number of years (1993 << 2000).
Too funny, back in the day I can't tell you how many times I picked up and set down the Asarnil model... it was a ton that's for sure.
Same. I went through at least 3 Dragons before settling on the WElfy one.
I just bought Asarnil couple of days ago at a games store a ways from where I live. The place has been around awhile so he has a bunch of old models.I think I even saw some Chaos dwarf stuff still in the box.Its pretty cool to see that old stuff still around.
@dwarf: shows how poorly the stuff sold?
I think the new High Elf dragon looks great as Asarnil.

On the weekend, I saw one guy who used the High Elf dragon without a rider, and had a peasant boy sitting on the Rocks as Asarnil in his Araby themed army.
You mean "princess girl" Wink? That would be Podhammers army, seen it online several times, and have the model you mentioned.
No, I'm pretty sure it was a peasant boy. I think he had a flute or some kind of musical instrument, like he was a snake (or dragon) charmer.
Isn't this the model you are talking about? Because it's definitely a girl!

Ah... Angel

I was imaging princess girl as some kind of scantily clad damsel lazing over the rocks.

At least thats how I imagine princesses anyway...
