Dogs of War

Full Version: Hey, super duper newbie here!

I'm really new at Warhammer, as in a month or so new. I've been playing with some friends who have a few armies (Skaven, High Elves, Vampire, Lizardmen) that let me play. After reading a lot, I've decided to throw my lot in with the Dogs of War. Great potential for a unique looking force.

As a mighty Wizard Lord, my Sadirath needs a good start for his merc army. He's a bit of a lusty fellow and likes it when it's dirty and in the trenches (at least as long as it's not him). So he wants a good infantry base.

As a cost effective start to Dogs of War, do you think an Ogre Battalion is a good choice to get going? Sorry for the newb question...I'll try and catch up fast.

But either way, excited to read army lists, battle reports and the Ezine to bone up on my killing skills!

I think you would be better off with the empire battalion box actually, from Ogres you would get 3 ogre unit that takes up 3 out of your 4 special choices, which will severely limit your options. Better off just buying one box of ogres then.
Agreed. With the Empire battalion, you'd have a great start to a Dogs of War army.
Yeah, that's the more reasonable approach I think. I love the Ogre units I can bet but the Empire battalion has all the core friendly units.

Thanks for the input guys!
Welcome,
I'm surprised a newbie settled on the Dogs.

On the other hand, you get a bit of everything. So while from a rules point of view... perhaps not the most motivational thing to get someone into the game as they'll be losing a lot. However, they can find out what kind of figures they like best, and probably branch out to one of those armies later.

Anyway, welcome Sadirath.
I think your best bet is, to plan out what you're going to do first. Dogs of War armies generally require conversion, so it's good to plan what units you're going to use and what models you need.
But I do agree with M4c. If you're up to the task, converting using the Empire batallion is a good start. It'll get you Crossbowmen, Knights, and then you decide what to do with the State Troops and Greatswords.
When I get my 500 point Warband painted, I'll take a picture and post it. Hopefully it looks a combination of ramshackle with a pinch of evil. But evil in a more lackadaisical way, not as focused to evil as Chaos (i know there is counter logic to that statement).

But to explain why Dogs of War for newbie. As a role-playing gamer I've always gone, generally with a dual class or a triple class, a really complex back story no one else wants to hear about, and also a really neat costume everyone goes and gets a pop while I describe it to the party.

In Dogs of War there is more of an opening for a unique back story and a unique look.

But you can be sure I'll try to get Leadbelchers in there, if they work with a 500 pt army that is. Guess that's a separate question I'll figure out.
