Hi all,
Inspired by “henerius’ Massacre against Skaven 3500 vs 3500” I decided to make a list including some RoR units and I soon found out that Beorg and the Bearmen are one of the favourite choices. As I dislike Marauder models and as there are few official Beorg and the Bearmen models available in The Netherlands I started looking for an alternative unit. My eye eventually fell on the Teutogen Guard and Ar-Ulric Models which I painted long ago. They are lovely models and I would like to use them in my army.
An obvious choice for Teutogen Guard would be to use them as Paymasters Bodyguard, but as I would use Beorg more often I decided to make an alternative history for them.
The big question is if my story sounds plausible and if you would let someone use Teutogen Guard as Beorg (and were not talking about official tournaments of course)
The story goes as followed:
Johan Wolf and The Wolfbanner Guards
Johan Wolf was born in Middenheim as the third son of a low nobel family in Middenheim. As Johan showed some magical talents at young age his father decided to give him to the cult of Ulric for training. And so Johan became a Priest of Ulric.
Johan served the cult for many years and spent as many hours in battle as he did inside the library halls. He was a hard worker doing everything to become better and better, till he eventually was as strong as the present Ar-Ulrik. Still, in time he stared to realize that he would never be promoted any further then he was now, as he lacked a greater magical talent which his brother priests did have. Still he tried to gain more magical power and physical strength and his will to increase those skills soon became a true obsession. Eventually Johan reached to alchemy in the hope to gain his wanted skills and partly he succeeded as he soon found ways inside various forbidden books to make him stronger. Blind to the risk Johan created the forbidden potions and drank them. The potions made him stronger then any men in Middenheim or even the Empire, but it had a great cost, as he was unable to wield any magic when under the effects of the potions and the strength given to him by the potions did not last. This meant that he had to keep creating potions in order to keep his strength. Obsessed as he was he tried to improve the alchemy behind the potions but his experiments where soon noticed by the other members of the cult and they sentence him with treason and witchcraft. Johan who was blinded by his obsession, never saw what he did wrong and therefore disagreed with the sentence. He fled the city aided by some loyal friends and servants. Being called a witch Johan fled towards the borders of the empire in the hope of gaining some safety from the witchhunters who where now after him, but he soon found an other problem. As the further they travelled the fewer potions he had left and there was no way of buying them as the ingredients where hard to come by and he was the only one who knew the recipe. They eventually reached the borders of the Empire and ventured into Tilea. There Johan found the solution of his problem as he passed a monastery which was under attack of a beastmen warband. Johan and the survivors of his followers helped repel the attack and where rewarded in gold. Johan still wishing to be strong saw the light and offered his services to those who could afford him. With the money he funded his experiments. This hasn’t let to any breakthroughs for himself except that he almost lost his magical power because of the use of the strength potions.
Beorg stats and explanation how someone with Ar-Ulric stats gets these stats.
M Ws Bs S T W I A Ld
Johan 4 5 0 5 5 3 3 4 8
Banner bearer 4 4 3 3 3 1 4 2 7
Johan’s guard 4 4 3 3 3 1 4 1 7
Johan takes his potions before the battle making him react slower (-2I and -1Ld) but become stronger and faster (+1S, +1T and +1A.) Johan also carries a Hand weapon and Enchanted armour.
His guard is made up out of the survivors of the initial flight and some newly recruited humans who are willing to serve for some money. One of the survivors a good friend of Johan carries his Wolfbanner into battle. The Wolfbanner is Johans personal banner which was dragged all the way from Middenheim and has become a token of hope and strength.
The solders that form Johans guard are trained as any other Middenheim solder and are there for more skilled then others might be (Ws 4). Johans guard is armed with Light armour Hand weapons and shields.
Alchemy, priest: As a priest Johan knows how the win the normal people to his course, and so Johan puts great effort in his speeches before the battle. With strong words, clear truths and a little help from some potions he rouses the unit into a frenzy. The unit counts as having frenzy
Wolfbanner: The Wolfbanner is a inspiring present for the frenzied solders making them put even more efforts in their attack. The entire unit receives +1 to hit bonus in the initial round each hand-to-hand of combat
Johans enchanted armour: Johans magic armour gives him a 4+ ward save (instead of his normal one meaning he has no armour save.)
Johan and nine guard, including the banner bearer and musician can be hired as a special unit at a cost of 255 points. This is the minimum size of unit you can hire. The regiment may be enlarged by adding extra models at a cost of 8 points each.
Only thing not explained is the 0 for BS but as the will never fire a ranged weapon or need to take a Bs test it shouldn’t really course any problems. Nor does the Hand weapon he carry’s instead of Beorgs claw and teeth.
Any comment is welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Xi
