hey all Smile ive been playing dogs at tourneys in aus for a good 18 months now, with some success.. nowhere near podiums, but top half to third.. ive just discovered this forum and i thought id let id post the list that im taking to MOAB (mother of all battles) this year.. moab has traditionally been a good hunting ground for me.. i picked up a top 10 on battle points a few years ago using a 3 power dice blood dragon army, and last year i placed 20something out of 80 something with dogs (lvl4, lvl2, captain, paymaster, a bunch of naked cav, naked duellists, 2x4 maneaters, manflayers, naked norse, notably no truthsayer).. that list saw me deploy all of chars in the norse, who in turn hid behind the maneaters.. it's a tough army to get points out of, i play it conservatively, going for the 12-8 win..

this year, im trying something similiar.. but with one less unit of maneaters..
wizard lord, lvl 4, pegasus, talisman of protection
wizard, lvl 2, horse, dispel scroll, dispel scroll
wizard, lvl 2, horse
paymaster, barded horse, heavy armour, shield

6 heavy cav, barding
5 heavy cav
5 heavy cav
5 fast cav
5 fast cav
5 fast cav
9 duellists, pistols

4 maneaters, heavy armour, 1 great weapon, 3 brace of handguns
10 manflayers
10 norse marauders, shields
16 dwarfs, crossbows, heavy armour, shields, standard

1 cannon

i like to centre my army (maneaters Tongue) around an off centre piece of terain where ever possible.. the norse with bsb and the cheap wizard will deploy right behind the maneaters like so:
TTTTT
TTTTT MMMM
NNNN
where T= terain, M= maneater, and N= norse.. obviously the terrain wont allways be in, or just outside, my deployment zone.. sometimes it will be halfway up the table, and of a different size.. but regardless, i typically find a piece of terrain, and aim to centre my plans around it..
in this terrain, my manflayers will often scout.. to - in this example - their left i will deploy the 6 heavy cav, and one of the 5 heavy cav.. towards the centre of the table, 7" on plop down the dwarfs with the lvl 2 with scrolls.. to their right sit the duellists with pistols guarding (if need be) the cannon, to their right the last of the heavy cav.. the fast cav deploy just off the table edge (how far off depending on my opponents ability to inflict ranged damage) on the left flank, the centre behind or near the dwarfs, and the right flank..

order of deployment: fast cav (centre), fast cav, fast cav, heavy cav, heavy cav, 6 heavy cav, then my army..

for lores.. my lvl2s will often take heavens for reroll ones and d6 S4 no armour save or range.. the reroll ones will, early game be cast on the dwarfs, and manflayers, and when necessary, the maneaters.. lvl 4 im unsure about.. he used to be a heavens wizard when run with the truthsayer, but now that i have 2xrerolls already, that lore becomes somewhat superfluous.. if my oppenent suffers from psych then death (hoping for doom and darkness) becomes quite a good option, other top lores are metal and shadow.. against vamps/ daemons, my lvl 2s both take light.. my cheap wiz can also be employed as a throw unit if needed..

basically, im a shooting magic army, that has its shooting tied up in units that are quite hard to get..

thoughts????
also, are any improvements that could be made for future tournements??
This is not a bad army for Dogs of War. You're going for numbers, and that's pretty cool, tho the uber Dwarves are one hell of a points sink...

If it were me, I'd consider to pull the Xbows off the Dwarves to bump the Barded cav to Volands, and the Norse to Beorg's.

Agreed. I don't think it's worth putting XBows on Dwarves. You're paying for a basic XBow dwarf 4 more points than regular crossbowmen, for the extra weaponskill, toughness and leadership. So it's kind've like paying points for stuff you don't want to be in the situation to use.

Maybe pick up a champion for the Norse as well, just in the unlikely event you get charged. Volands are always nice for the extra punch. Not sure if I'd upgrade to Beorgs though if you're gonna use the Norse as a bunker, I think I'd want a few more Bearmen and then they start getting more expensive.

Dunno, I'm not a very experienced player in general. I've been to like... 1 tournament ever, and that was just this year with my Lizards, and haven't played a game with Dogs yet (Current project, just starting really).
the hiding behind maneaters tactic is a new one for me.

Nice list.. I have some thinking todo.

Thanks for sharing.

i do like beorgs, and i shall run them again in the future.. volands im not so fond of.. with only a 2+ save and ld 8 they are quite succeptable to panic, not what i want from a 216 point unit.. the extra punch is nice, but situational.. no immunity to fear hurts as well.. my flanking cav is there to create control zones, and press a little, not to pick me up a stack of points.. thats the job of my special and characters..

i really like dwarfs without crossbows, that said, the way i run them makes them more pricey then when armed with crossbows.. i like a unit of 20 with standard and champ to hide the bsb..

dwarf crossbows are in this list in place of regular crossbowmen for their ld9.. the armour and toughness is nice as well.. these elements combined give me a second character bunker, if the norse get threatened..

i will post again in the battle reports section after a practise game in a couple of days time, and again after the tourney.. i haven't been playing consistently for a while, however i was in europe recently, and checked out the etc.. that experience has got warhammer flowing through my brain atm, so im searching for some new ideas to revamp my dogs army away from its usual build..

cheers for the posts so far, and keep them coming Smile
