The Lost Children of Morkain
By Ryan Marquardt 06-27-09
Long before the time of Sigmar, a great human civilization stretched across the land now know as the Badlands. This was the Kingdom of Strygos with the seat of power in the once great city of Mourkain. The populace of the Kingdom of Strygos was lead into a fascination and reverence of death by their leader Kadon who found the Crown of Nagash on the corpse of Alcadizaar of Khemri, slayer of Nagash, along the blind river. Mourkain grew around the tomb built for Alcadizaar.
As the Kingdom of Strigos grew, a powerful vampire from the south was drawn to it. Ushoran, first of the Strigoi Vampires and brother of Neferata, moved north away from the wreckage of past vampire bloodline alliances. Ushoran joined with Kadon to direct the expansion the Strygos civilization and develop even greater necromantic arts. This expansion displaced many greenskin tribes and forced them into the World’s Edge Mountains. Kadon and Ushoran set-up a vampire court to rule over the kingdom of Strygos and Ushoran sought to mend past fences with Neferata and the vampires of the south and invite them to join the court. However, Neferata’s loathing for her brother could only be matched by her treachery. Neferata warned the kings of the realm that would someday become the empire of the terrible atrocities of the Strygos kingdom and that it was a haven for vampires. The kings mounted a campaign against the Kingdom Strygos and Ushoran gathered Morkain’s strength to repel them. Unfortunately for the denizens of Stygos, Orc Warboss Dork Redeye and his shaman Fuzzgig lead a massive greenskin Waaagh! against the city of Mourkain in revenge for their displacement.
Ushoran was able to hold off the kings of the north but was unable to hold out against the greenskin hoard. Kadon was felled in the fight and many of the necromantic items he had crafted were lost. Ushoran fled for his survival with as many of his vampire thralls as could make it out alive. The city of Morkain was razed the Kingdom of Strygos was sundered for all time.
Although their cities and leaders were gone, the Strigany, the modern descendants of Mourkain have lived on. They have settled across the old world and along its fringes often persecuted for their past. The modern worship of Morr, god of death and dreams, is said to find its foundation with the Strigany. It is said that Ushoran seeks to rebuild the Morkain civilization and that Kadon has risen from the Marsh of Madness. To this end, the forces of Strgany are on the move, searching for the lost artifacts that Kadon and constructing the foundations of a new Kingdom for the Strigany.
Mercenary warbands under the helm of Strigany quest for a new homeland, lost treasures of the past, and to rebuild the great halls of their fathers. Among these halls is the ruined fortress of Vorag. Vorag Bloodytooth was the first Ghoul King, a survivor of the city of Morkain, he united the tribes of goals in the Desolation of Nagash and used them to make slaves of the Red Cloud Goblins. The slaves built his fortress overlooking the Plain of Bones in the Southern Dark Lands. In a purge of the Grey Hag Goblin tribe, Vorag was mortally injured, his leaderless ghoul army scattered, and his fortress was left to the ravenges of time. Now light flickers from its windows again as the Strigany and their mercenary’s have come home.
