Does the fact that a payamaster being treated exactly like a BSB, mean that when the paymaster's unit runs away he dies automatically?
Yup, afraid so, according to "is treated exactly like a Battle Standard". However, the rules also say: "(+1 combat resolution, re-roll Break tests within 12", can be captured by the enemy if he’s killed, etc)"

Using the official rules, yes, he would die, but the whole pdf could use some clarification on this matter (like why would a paymaster holding a key die fighting to protect it, when he could run away with it really easily?)
Well that sucks ! Looks like I'll have to use the bodyguard......
There is really very little that needs clarification as far as the Paymaster goes. He counts as the armies BSB, and follows all the rules for it.

As for why would the paymaster die to protect the key? Why does everyone assume he just carries the key? He has the key on him, but I have always seen the paymaster standing on the paychest. Mydas' chest is so large it has to be carried on a cart, but not everyone's is. Alternatively, it's not ridiculous at all to assume that the opposing army goes to EXTREME effort to capture the Paymaster when his unit breaks.
Actually, he doesn't have the paychest with him anymore, at least rules-wise, only Mydas does that. The paymaster in 6th ed only carries his key according to the description, it mentions nothing about keeping the paychest with him. From that POV, I find it very silly indeed to have him "drop"his key or die defending it. But as said, Dogs of War could really use an errata about now, I hate it when the fluff doesn't correspond with the rules. Although, this does allow me to nag at stuff, and I do love nagging...
Ha! If you are REALLY hooked on nagging, you should try playing High Elves. Between EVERYONE (and I mean everyone, even Vampires or Demons!) complaining about your army, it's gear, it's choices, it's look and even it's fluff, there is ample opportunity for CONSTANT complaining. I fully believe there is no Warhammer forum online so full of complaining as one dedicated to High Elves.

Besides, considering that Battle Standard Bearers have become SUCH a standard choice in 8th, with the ability to re-roll all psychology, the negatives of us having to include the Paymaster are significantly reduced, and we no longer have to fear losing to 21 skeletons and running automatically.

Now if only there was a way to use the Paymasters re-roll to re-roll the panic from when he dies...

Ha, my friend plays High Elves and he would totally agree with this! He always mentions how useful my board is and how not full of asses it is. I guess all they do over there is trash each others lists and complain about everything that happens. But dang, that army is pretty good.

Just be careful with the precious Paymaster (something I need to practice if you read my latest Skaven battle) and it's fine.
I am PRETTY good with keeping the Paymaster alive, but honestly my opponents don't OFTEN throw their whole armies at him. Though, in the last edition, having a Slaan with lore of metal casting the character snipe spell on my 2+ armour save/no wardsave model which has ALSO been nominated by the bane head was a pretty good way to end the game in the first turn.

In this edition, with the Sniper rules being right in the main rulebook, placeable artillery, multiple ranks being able to direct attacks at him, and more high level casting of anti-character basic spells... I am honestly spending his entire points allowance of magic on keeping him alive.

And this forum is AWESOME. I realize it is smaller and thus more friendly, but coming from a High Elf forum history, it's almost insanely better. Apparantly, if you have pointy ears, tall helmets and aren't emo, well... basically you are even MORE emo.
I am considering hiding him in a unit of Volands. Throw the merc captain, and merc lord into the unit. Paymaster in 2nd rank of 5.

To get really crazy I might throw in a 4th level life wizard into the 2nd rank and buff the unit even more.
I believe the phrase I'm looking at would be "all eggs in one.."
Yeah... such a unit would be tough perhaps, but with the boosted artillery accuracy you'll be mortared/grudge throwered/hotpotted/rock lobber'd to pieces.
True --you would be a target but 4+ regen on them, along with fixing characters every time you cast a lore of life spell, then bringing troops back with spells. It should survive the 2 round it takes to get into combat.

Yes its most of the eggs in 1 basket but what a basket it is.

Note -- for me I already have the Paymaster in that unit, my wizard already is attached to a different one. I am just adding a lord and hero level characters. these I normally do not field so it will cost me a unit or 2 to place them in the game.

will let all know how the trial goes.
