hello, it's me again. i've a real problem to bring up and i'd like as much feedback as you can give.
the first week of august, i'll be playing dogs of war in a warbands league. the league will start off with only150 pts, and escalate to a maximum of 500 pts over 6 weeks. as far as i've been told, i must still have a paymaster, which will be exempt from the 25% hero max. that leaves me with 95 pts of troops.
what the heck should i bother taking? lol.
if it matters, every army will be represented, and i'll be playing them at random. i'd hoped not to have to play a gunline or shooty heavy army, since i did dwarves last round. also, i'm not allowed RoR's, so no fun fancy units.
i was thinking about pikemen, but i'd only get 8 with heavy armor. should i just rush duellists in a massive mob?

I reckon you should start off with some Duelists, and maybe a couple of heavy cav.
Up to you if you arm the Duelists heavily, or cheaply - both have their advantages...

and that's why i come here.
truth be told, several hard working, self proclaimed genius minds have been rewriting the rules top to toe for the current edition, so lord knows what new rules will be there. but, let's base it off of the old rules for now.
heavy cav you say. i've never used them before (coming from dwarfs and wood elves). dont mean to get off topic, but are they the flanking sort, or do you generally just charge them up the center?
Well, heavy cavalry rely on the charge to be effective, and thus must more or less break the opponent on the first round of combat, or risk being bogged down and flanked. As such, the larger a unit, the more concern that, due to their ranks, they will be able to hold up your charge. Small units of heavy cavalry are thus best used to go after weak infantry units, usually about 10 in number, which they can normally break through.
A unit of Duelists with Pistols, minimum sized, is a great unit at that points value (or any), as the damage they can deal, combined with their mobility, gives you real options.
In my opinion, a small dogs of war army is all about just that: Options. You cannot reasonably field useful ranked fighting units at that points value, and can't afford any real throw away units, so build your list with damage and avoidance in mind, make everything useful, and refuse to fight on your opponents terms.
Go with the Duellists with pistols. Point for pont one of the best units in the game.
In those low pointed games there is nothing that compares.
I ran a unit of 18 in 500 points. Best unit in entire tourney.

thanks for that last post. i dont know why it took me reading that thread, but it kind of clicked that everyone will have units of 3 -10 dudes. i've been stressing out about only being able to afford that many, and thinking i'm going to come up against 20 man blocks.
also, reading over it, it made me excited to play cav. so heavy cav is definately in. would you recommend taking a captain with basic equipment, or waiting until later on to recruit one?
At only 150 points, I might be inclined to forgo a Captain in favour of more ranks/models. If you get a unit up to its normal, minimum size, you could upgrade someone into a unit champ, which should take the place of a Captain (at least for a little while).
so then, a sketchy list would probably consist of:
- 4 heavy cav - 84
-barding
- 7 duellists - 63
-pistols
total: 147
i have until the first week of august. thoughts?
is there any reason pikes are particularly bad in low point games? the strike first ability seems pretty useful.
update from the game runner. first hero choice is half price (just for the dude, not his junk). that being said, time for a cap'n.
updated idea list:
-4 heavy cav 84
- barding
- captain 31
- heavy armor and shield
-3 duellists 27
- pistols
142/150
8pts to bank
I say give it a go, and see how it does.
Oh, and let us know as well...
for sure.
thank you all very much for your help.
i dont know how many people were interested, but i was asked to post the results, so i'ma gonna.
i played two demo games against the same bretonnian list, and it was shenanigans. 2+ rerollable arm and a 6+ ward. sure. but, after that, i played against an empire army of 144 pts.
the goal was to run my leader across the board as fast as possible and avoid to ambush coming from either side. i deployed my pikemen (7 including a hero in armor), in the middle of the board and managed to sprint off in two turns, losing only two guys to crossbow fire. meanwhile, my pistoleers were picking off crossbowmen, and quickly died to thier fire. five less casualties for the pikemen though.
the final list was:
-captain w/ heavy armor and shield
- 6 heavy armored pikemen
- 5 pistol toting duelists.
i lost one troop from each unit, and i now have 163 points to spend and i'm wondering how i want to do that. i'm between filling the pikemen in and getting the hero some survivability, or adding 5 heavy cav, and getting the hero something.
My gut raction is that you bulk up your main warband unit, so that you can start to win combats via ranks, banners, and outnumbering (if you guys are still going by the 7th edition rules). Also, your pikes will fare better with more ranks, whcih equals more atacks.
And whoever brought a 2+/6++ save into a warband game of less than 200 points is a total douche.
this will also allow me to put off buying some heavy cav for a couple weeks. we're doing 8th ed, but more attacks is still valuable.
and yeah, total donkey move. to boot, he's my room mate.
excellent, you dont need to travel very far to slap him on behalf of this community then!
game two was, wouldn't you know it, against my room mate. his paladin wrecked me, but not before i got the objective (it was right next to me).
luckily i rolled well on recovery and only lost a duellist and three pikes. i'm thinking my next step is heavy cav, since i doubt about else will have it (now that bretonnia's out of the way).
the last two games, my army consisted of:
15 pikemen, heavy arm
5 duellists, pistols
5 heavy cav, barding
captain,
+1 to hit
6+ ward,
barded horse
i've gotten massacred in each, rolling casualties just enough to recover what i lost. after the second massive loss, i've decided to take my deaths and just power up my captain.
new list:
5 pikes
5 duellists
6 cav
captain
- pegasus
- enchanted shield
- mask of terror
- +1 to hit
- one reroll on armor save
wish me luck
unless he has a cannon/bolt thrower, run ya pikes 1 wide and 5 deep

Lol. they're freaking useless anyway, i may as well.
